Senior Frontend Developer / Principal Design Engineer Consultant - Digital Reality Innovation Hub

Hexagon
2021-02-01 — 2023-12-31

Worked as a senior consultant at Hexagon Digital Reality Innovation Hub in Zurich visualizing 3D digital twins of the real-life geospatial & reality capture data and using them for different use cases e.g. for the industrial metaverse. I lead the UI/UX of the team as well as actively prototyped and developed new 2D and 3D features in code together with the frontend team.

To improve product development process, I also created a design system with smart Figma components for designers and React component library for developers that was spread across the company and used as basis for the corporate-wide design system. All features and products used the design system components to ensure consistent look and feel and separating the visual styles from the code. I also advocated and educated people about UI/UX and held tutorials for HxDR design system usage across the company. I also influenced in the corporate UX streering committee spreading the innovation hub best practices, design process, design patterns and tools across divisions helping Hexagon to build more user-friendly products and stronger brand image via design.

I worked with several HxDR (Hexagon Digital Reality) products such as Geospatial Data Store, Reality Cloud Studio as well as desktop and mobile apps. HxDR combines advanced visualization technologies, AI, and machine learning processes building immersive data visualizations based on high-quality imagery from drones and terrestial laser scanners. 3D Visualizations can be used for example in development of smart cities, entertainment industry, crime scene investigation, game industry, architecture, and construction.

Lead Frontend Engineer (Vue) - Cleantech Incubator

Oyster Lab by Alpiq
2020-03-09 — 2021-01-31

Lead frontend development at Oyster Lab, which was a cleantech incubator aiming to make the world a greener place to live. The innovation lab utilized lean, agile, and design thinking in its processes while innovating, prototyping and developing new solutions for some of the hardest challenges on the planet. The main focus of the lab was on adjacent business and moonshots. Together with the team we implemented user-friendly products from brainstorming to MVP to release in a fast-paced environment. The lab and whole Zürich office was discontinued due to a strategic change within mother company Alpiq in the beginning of 2021.

As the only frontend-focused engineer in the team, I was responsible for setting up frontend architectures and global state management for software products, as well as building responsive component libraries and mobile/web apps with the latest technologies. I also implemented one backend from scratch, helped with design when needed, and experimented with new technologies to validate hypotheses and find better solutions to problems.

Example projects I worked with:
- Juicar Electric vehicle subscription service to make e-vehicles like Teslas accessible to more people
- Claridoo Smart electricity platform to monitor and optimise usage of electricity in households
- GreenMyRide Carbon emission offset mobile app and related website to track, monitor and compensate CO2 emissions

Lead Frontend Engineer (React) - Safety Net for Digital Nomads

SafetyWing (Y-Combinator 2018)
2018-09-01 — 2019-12-04

SafetyWing (Y-combinator 2018) is a startup working on creating a global safety net and the country on the internet for digital nomads and remote companies, opening people a possibility to work and travel all over the world.

As one of the first employees, I was responsible for frontend engineering and UX design, focusing on creating maintainable frontend architecture connected to APIs and providing a smooth user experience for the users. I created wireframes, frontend architecture, responsive component library as well as middleware from scratch. Our user-friendly UI played a significant role while we scaled our customers to 10k+ in less than a year. SafetyWing's NPS score comments and user interviews praised the UI repeatedly as part of the positive feedback. As the company grew, I also participated in hiring, and guided and managed new frontend developers, lead sprint plannings, and did code reviews.

On top of creating B2C/B2B products from scratch, I also created effective data-driven analytics tools to monitor growth and other metrics by developing internal custom dashboards for the startup. Additionally, I worked with SEO, marketing tools (e.g. affiliate programme creation), logging systems, testing, UX design and usability of the software products. Platform-agnostic, cross-browser compatible, easy to maintain, and well-tested code played a significant role during product implementation and we utilised continuous delivery on the frontend.

Frontend Developer and Designer (Angular) - Particle Accelerator Data Visualization

CERN
2024-06-01 — 2018-08-31

Designed and implemented a complete web frontend with data visualization for Large Hadron Collider (LHC, largest particle accelerator in the world) and related systems. The work was part of the Post Mortem System, which is a powerful diagnostic tool that organizes and analyzes problems and events in transient data of all relevant particle accelerator equipment systems.

The work included design and implementation of the web UI from scratch by designing the layout, task flow, and architecture, connecting APIs to the modern frontend framework, and transforming big amounts of data to suitable formats. The work also included handling with numbers that exceed the maximum limit of JavaScript. Data visualization was done in a way that took into account limited perception capabilities of humans by using information visualization tools such as visual seeking mantra. Work included also advanced filtering connected to URL, pagination, realtime location based date/epoch time conversions, continuous integration, unit testing and active usage of other code quality tools such as linters.

The work was a 10-week contract, and I was responsible for the frontend and UI/UX independently. During the Summer I managed to finish an advanced data visualization system with high usability and UX for all main Post Mortem events happened in particle accelerators.

VR Developer and Designer (Angular) - 5G Data Center Management

Nokia
2018-01-01 — 2018-06-13

Explored innovative ways to improve complex data management, visualization and analysis of data center data from both system and user perspectives by designing and implementing Angular 2D and VR UI for Airframe Data Center Manager Software.

The focus of my thesis was to build a tool that transforms JSON data center data from APIs dynamically to 2D and 3D views of data centers. The 3D view had a virtual reality support that is used to increase the immersiveness of visualization in addition to preattentive processing in traditional visualizations. Material Design guidelines and VR Best Practices were applied to the user interface design and development.

Tools: Angular 5/6, TypeScript, REST APIs, HTML5, SCSS, Three.js (WebGL), d3.js, WebVR, A-Frame, Information Visualization, Big data analytics, Python, Material Design, UI/UX Design, User-centred design, Gitlab, Rxjs

Software Developer (.NET) - Circular economy

Outotec
2015-05-01 — 2017-01-13

Working as a Software Developer Trainee in R&D team of HSC Chemistry software by creating a recycling simulation module from scratch aiming at improving circular economy by using natural and secondary (recycled) resources in a more sustainable way. The optimization was based on the use of different probability distributions and finding suitable coefficients based on existing data.

In my Bachelor's thesis, I developed a working WEEE (Waste of Electric and Electronic Equipment) recycling process simulation model for Outotec's HSC Chemistry Software. The simulation was based on a real WEEE recycling process. Work was funded by Tekes and implemented in collaboration with Kuusakoski Oy.

During this period I got familiar with the whole life cycle in the software developing process including research, design, implementation, testing, and documentation. Working language was English. I worked full-time during summers and part-time during the school year.

Tools: VB.NET, Visual Studio IDE, Winforms, DevExpress, version control, Jira, Microsoft Excel, Mathematics (especially probability distributions), Circular Economy, Mineral Processing, Chemistry, and Physics.
